Garden Pest Management:

Dealing with Unwanted Visitors

Dealing with garden pests can be a royal pain in your day!

As a gardener, few things are as disheartening as discovering damage to your plants that seemed perfectly healthy just hours ago.

The culprits behind these destructive acts are often garden pests, including slugs, worms, caterpillars, birds, snails, and the occasional gopher.

While it may be impossible to completely eradicate these pests, it is essential to take action after investing so much effort into your garden.

Insects pose a significant threat to your garden, as they can reside in various places such as soil, old weeds, or leaf piles.

To deter insects, it is important to eliminate potential habitats by removing decaying matter like leaves and weeds from your yard.

Additionally, regularly turning over the soil and breaking up clumps will disrupt their living spaces and expose any hidden underground insects.

Another effective method for pest control is using dormant spray during the dormant period of your plants, typically around February or early March.

Dormant spray has proven successful in my own garden, but it is crucial to follow the instructions precisely.

Applying it haphazardly, as I once did, can result in unintentionally harming your entire garden and even your neighbour’s.

Remember that some insects can actually benefit your garden, so it is important to identify and protect those that contribute positively.

Birds can also be troublesome garden visitors. Despite my efforts to shoo them away, they persistently return.

To address this issue, I have found that placing a bird feeder in my yard not only keeps them away from my garden but also adds an interesting decorative element.

Investing in a bird feeder can save you time and money in the long run.

While it may not completely eliminate the bird problem, it certainly reduces its impact.

Additionally, having a dog has proven helpful in deterring birds.

If you notice mounds of dirt in your yard and unexplained plant deaths, you may be dealing with a gopher infestation.

Fortunately, I have not personally encountered this issue, but a friend of mine states he has struggled with it extensively.

Gophers are rodents measuring between five to fourteen inches in length, featuring black, light brown, or white fur and small tails.

Trapping is an effective method for eliminating these root-eating pests. Successfully locating the gopher’s tunnels and setting the trap correctly is key to capturing them.

Another approach involves using smoke bombs, which are placed in the tunnels to fill them with smoke and ideally reach the gopher.

If you suspect any of the mentioned pests are causing havoc in your garden, it is crucial to take immediate action to eliminate the problem.

So I hope that you have no problem with dealing with garden pests!

Allowing them to persist will only lead to further establishment and damage.

So Happy Gardening!
